Creating Templates
Templates let you define recipes, formulas, BOMs, and assemblies. Each step below has a Show me button that lights up the compass on the matching control so you can see exactly where it lives.
This tour spans three places: the Templates page, the New Template dialog, and the template builder where you add inputs. The compasses route you to the right place — open the New Template dialog (or any template) for the dialog and builder steps.
The tour
1. Go to the Templates page
Templates are managed on the Templates page. The compasses route you to the right place — open the New Template dialog when you reach that step.
2. Start a new template
Click New Template on the Templates page to open the creation dialog. Templates can be Finished Goods (products you sell), Building Blocks (sub-components), or Bundles (auto-deducting kits).
3. Choose the template type
In the dialog, pick the type. Finished Good — a final product you sell. Building Block — an item used to make another item. Bundle — automatically deducts inputs when sold.
4. Pick the output item
Choose the item this template makes. This links the template to an existing inventory item.
5. Pick the output unit
The unit this template produces (jar, kg, case, etc). Combined with yield, this expresses what one batch makes.
6. Set the yield
Enter how many output units one batch produces. The yield drives how much of each input is needed per batch.
7. Template name
For Finished Goods, the name auto-generates from the output item and yield (e.g. "Strawberry Jam - 50 jars"). Edit it if you like. For Building Blocks, enter your own descriptive name.
8. Continue to the builder
Click Continue to open the template builder where you'll add inputs and configure production details.
9. Add an input
In the builder, click Add Input to add an ingredient or component. Each input picks an item, a unit, and a quantity needed per yield.
10. Pick the input item
In the input form, pick which item from your catalog you want to use as an input.
11. Pick the input unit
Choose which unit of measure to enter the input quantity in.
12. Set the input quantity
Enter how much of this input is needed to make the template's yield. Example: yield is 5 gallons and the recipe is 10 oz per gallon → enter 50 oz.
13. Add instructions (optional)
Add per-input notes — "Use room temperature butter", "Pre-heat before adding", etc. Skip if not needed.
14. Save (and add more)
Check Add more to keep the form open after saving so you can add another input. Click Save Input when you're done.
Tips
- Use Building Blocks for sub-recipes that feed into Finished Goods — keeps ingredient lists tidy.
- Bundles automatically deduct their inputs from inventory when sold; use them for kits and assemblies.
- Yield can be expressed in batches or units; pick whichever matches your production process.
