Use Related to keep transactions together and show which record is waiting on another. These relationships are for reference: they do not move inventory, reserve stock, change statuses, or block work from being completed.
How to Get There
Open a sales order, work order, purchase order, saved bill, invoice, transfer order, received log, or fulfillment. Open its ⋮ menu and choose Add related record.
- On a saved bill form, the menu is beside Bill #.
- For an invoice or fulfillment, use that record's own menu inside the sales order's Invoice or Fulfill section.
- For a received log, open its row from Receive > Received and use the menu in the detail panel.
Add a Related Record
- Choose Add related record on the transaction you are viewing.
- Search for the other transaction. The empty search shows up to ten Recent records.
- Select one or more records using their checkboxes or by clicking their rows. Your selections stay checked as you search.
- Choose Related, Waiting on, or Waiting for from the relationship picker.
- Click Relate.
Search by a record's number or type. Depending on the record, you can also search by customer, vendor, item, lot, or tracking details. Results come from the business you are currently using.
The chosen relationship applies to every selected record. After all relationships save, the dialog closes. If a save fails, the remaining records stay selected so you can try again; successful saves are kept.
To add more, choose Add related record again or hover over the existing badges and click the + circle beside them. You can also reach this button with your keyboard.
What the Relationship Means
| Choice | Meaning from the record you are viewing |
|---|---|
| Related | The two records belong together, with no dependency direction. |
| Waiting on | This record is waiting on the other record. |
| Waiting for | The other record is waiting on this record. |
For example, if a sales order is waiting on production, choose Waiting on and select the work order. The work order shows the reverse relationship as Waiting for.
View, Change, or Remove a Relationship
The Related field lists saved relationships. On a work order it is in Details; on a received log it appears below Documents.
Hover over or focus a related record to preview its details. Click the record to open it; an invoice or fulfillment opens inside its sales order.
To change the relationship, open Add related record again, select the same record, choose a different relationship, and click Relate. A pair of records has one relationship at a time.
To remove it, use the × control beside the related record. This removes the relationship from both sides without deleting either transaction.
Good to Know
- Draft transfer orders are not available to relate. Submit the transfer first.
- Manual relationships are separate from links created by receiving, invoicing, or co-manufacturer purchasing. Relating or removing a record does not change those workflows.
- You can also create a work order from a sales-order item. Saving it relates the sales order as Waiting on the new work order.
